How to Read a Job Posting Like a Lawyer in 2026
Most job seekers read postings looking for a job they want. A lawyer reads them looking for what the employer is actually saying, what they are not saying, and what the document might mean later. In 2026, you should start reading postings the same way.
“A posting that requires Canadian experience is not just a red flag. It is a violation you can report.”
What a compliant posting must include
Employers with 25 or more employees posting jobs for Ontario-based roles must include expected compensation or a compensation range with a maximum spread of $50,000, a statement disclosing whether artificial intelligence is used to screen or assess applicants, a clear statement on whether the posting is for an existing vacancy, and no Canadian experience requirements in the posting or application form.
If any of these are missing, that posting may be non-compliant. And a non-compliant posting tells you something about the employer before you ever speak to them.
What to look for beyond compliance
The salary range tells you what the employer believes the role is worth. A range that skews low, or a range so wide it tells you nothing, is a signal. A posting that says the salary is “competitive” and nothing else is a signal. A posting that requires Canadian experience is not just a red flag — it is a violation you can report.
The vacancy statement matters. A posting that does not confirm a real vacancy exists may be a ghost job. Before you tailor your resume, verify that the role is real.
Check the company independently. Search the employer name plus reviews on Glassdoor and Reddit. Look at their LinkedIn headcount and recent activity. Real employers have a traceable presence.
